The play consists of scenarios which take the audience inside the forbidden walls of an ordinary, American high school faculty lounge. This is where the teachers get honest. They blow off steam, confess their most embarrassing moments and chime in on the latest trends in education. And they know best what happens in a high school where teachers are overworked and underpaid as well as tested emotionally and intellectually daily. The weight of an unknown future hangs over the characters as they struggle to understand their own motivations for teaching. Not only does the play include five teachers who represent every high school teacher in America, but also five students who are directly affected by their teaching styles. These roles require the two male students and three female students who weave in and out of the stories, sometimes portraying characters who leap from the teachersʼ past as they look back on their own high school experiences. Teaching is about relationships; good teaching is like a dance between a teacher and a student. The dance is often clumsy, but sometimes graceful. The play is a comedy...until itʼs not. Act I inspires hearty laughter at the humanness of these men and women who teach, and Act II brings the audience to tears at that same humanity and the students who test it.
